Workshops A

09.00 am – 10.00 am – “The Autistic Paradigm from the Inside Out”, Leonora Gregory-Collura & Charlie Collura. This interactive workshop is designed to have the participants experience (for the first time) “The Autistic Paradigm from the inside out” – how autistic people feel and experience a variety of situations. The purpose is to empower the educators and parents/care-givers to connect what they learn about the Autistic Paradigm to their own experiences and perceptions. Using video footage and interactive sensory exercises the participant/care-giver can bridge what they learn to daily application in the classroom, home and surrounding community environments.

10.15 am – 11.15 am – “Navigating Life and Education: Keeping the Big Picture in Sight”. Dr. Perner has written extensively about autism & has conducted workshops at numerous conferences focusing on College preparation and overcoming barriers for ASD students. This workshop will focus attention on how to effectively navigate life and education from the autistic perspective. Dr. Perner is a frequent presenter for the American Psychological Association and is the editor of “Scholars with Autism” to be released in 2012, a book he will be referencing during the workshop. Participants will find this workshop informative, applicable and fun. Dr. Perner delivers his material with humor as well as personal insight.

11.30 am – 12.45 pm – “An interactive Process” – Join the International team for lunch at Lonsdale Quay Market, up close and personal with our Emcee, presenters/hosts, recipients (past & present), our international radio team, the ANCA Founders and family. Put down your books and gain an understanding of autism from the people who know best.

01.00 pm – 02.00 pm – “Cultural Identity” – showcasing organisations, nominees and recipients from different countries. Presented by Charlie Collura.

02.15 pm – 03.15 pm – “Relationships in community”. Moving beyond autism: developing effective personal and professional relationships. How to build successful networks for the long term.
03.30 pm – 04.30pm – “Coloring perceptions through positive imagery”. ”. Interactive Workshops’ SHOWCASE, “Creating partnerships in your community” – presented by radio show host and mom Kelly Green. Presenting projects by autistic students & students from the Sunshine Coast School District – what educators can do to make a difference; Entrepreneurship – creating bridges with the business community; Murals and Chalk Walk Festivals - what a parent can do in his or her local community providing hands on experiences for ASD children & youth.

10.15 am – 11.15 am – “Visual Arts – Planting Pictures”. 2011 and 2010 Award Recipients, Esther Brokaw, Kevin Hosseini, Dani Bowman and Joel Anderson will share what captivated their imagination in the visual arts and how they have used visual arts as a communication tool, a form of personal expression and an opportunity to follow their passion in self advocacy, serving community and creating a career. This workshop is for individuals of all ages and is experiential & interactive.*Bring your cameras, iPods and laptop computers. Art supplies will be provided.

01.00 pm – 02.00 pm – “Literary Arts – Guiding Principals toward Success” – Professional actor/director Michael Harding working alongside autistic writers Tim Pylypiuk (ANCA Radio Host), 2011 recipient Erin Clemens, and 2010 recipient Paul Maywood explore the use of creative writing and its practical applications in a variety of genres.

02.15 pm – 03.15 pm – “Music Arts – sounds, beats, music, voice”, Join recording artists 2011 recipient, Samantha Ruderham and 2010 recipients Joel Anderson and Scott Siegel. See how these young artists have found their voices through music to communicate their thoughts to the world. Look, Listen, Laugh and Learn!
