Erik Estabrook, Poet & contributing writer Naturally Autistic International online newsletter

Erik wants to add a beautiful touch to the world, poetry is his way of fixing the planets’ problems. He enjoys community advocacy and volunteering. Writing has provided a window to his own soul and increased his relationship with God.  In the future with his writing he hopes to touch lives and increase autism awareness.

Erik is self-taught and not afraid to try any poetry form.  He had found the cinquain and villanelle to be 2 of his favorite forms.  In his words, “They allow an entirely new perspective and should be respected because they make poetry even more diverse.  When you get one right there’s no feeling like it. Getting one right to me means you add your way to the form.”

When asked what he enjoys most he says, “… a peaceful life with my family and volunteering brings me peace of mind with time to help others.”

Read about Erik’s journey as a young emerging and very talented poet in our Premiere Issue of Naturally Autistic magazine – Fall 2010

Paul Maywood biography

Paul Maywood, Contributing writer, poet, photographer

Paul Maywood, contributing writer, poet, photographer Naturally Autistic International online newsletter

Paul is fifty-five and has Asperger’s Syndrome. A result of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Paul has had to deal with seizures from the age of seven weeks. During childhood he made many visits to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (now closed) in Brighton, East Sussex, due to having status epilepticus, up until aged fifteen. Paul attended a Remedial School where he learned to read at age seven.  At age eleven he was admitted to Lingfield Hospital School (NCYPE) where he learned to speak Spanish (French and German to a degree since) in out-of-school hours. On three Occasions he was asked to interpret for Sussex Police at East Grinstead.

At the end of April 1971 he left school and spent two-and-a-half years at the National Society for Epilepsy, in Chalfont St Peter, Bucks. This was before going to work for a Heating Firm in East Grinstead in 1973, where he worked for twenty months before being made redundant and returning to the NSE for a three-month spell. On January 12th 1976 (ten years to the day from being admitted to LHS) Paul went to work for a Hygiene Firm with whom he is employed to this day. On his late Dad’s retirement from the Police Force, Paul and his family moved from East Grinstead to Uckfield where his Mum took up a Post at a Home for the Elderly there.

From August 1975 up until October 1996 Paul had an enjoyable experience as an Arsenal Supporter at Highbury, where he had a Free Pass for seventeen out of twenty-one Seasons; both as an Arsenal Lottery Agent and as a Match Day Assistant to the Arsenal Groundsman. This made him privy to being guaranteed a Cup Final ticket whenever they reached a Wembley Final. Paul has met numerous celebrities in the course of this position that he acquired through “being in the right place at the right time.”

“I have written many poems in my time, sadly most have been mislaid over the years.”
