Drama & Community
A Radio Drama Blog
By Tim Pylypiuk
Wow, just coming off the conclusion of our serial play “Tug Of War” with not a dry eye in my system. The ending really affected me much more than expected, especially combing the final words with Pink Floyd’s early demo version of Us And Them. I was y proud of all the ingredients gelling with the final episode, where I was supported by Phoebe Murer, original writer of the story the play is based on, whom has been at my side for past Saturdays bringing it to life.
I think it also brought out a sense of nostalgia since I’ve been at this radio game for a while, having hosted interview shows with a gaggle of people from every walk of life imaginable. Looking back, its humbling to know how much I had grown as a radio host.
Also been thinking about the origins of Radio Drama itself. You might assume the concept was my idea, but the truth states otherwise. Leonora-Gregory Collura thought of it first, seeing the potential of having a radio show similiar to what she experienced growing up where families would gather near their radio and listen to plays performed by proffesional voice actors with exelemplary pedigrees live in real time before the advent of television.
I approach it as illustrating the root of storytelling itself. Before technology, internet, mass media, DVDs, Motion Pictures, even long before pen and paper itself, storytelling could be broken down to a simple formula:
A crowd of eager onlookers (camp fire optional), and one person telling a story through diction, gestures, and facial expressions. Radio Drama sets to retain that concept from my perspective, just as it retains the concept of THE radio play as from Leonora’s Perspective.
Since then, it has been a whirlwind of experiences for me. From the premier episode where I performed, for the first time in a long while, the performance piece that put me on the map in terms of the artform “Speak For Myself”, to wonderful stories like Let Them Eat Cake, The Heart Of The Fan Letter, Scholastic Memories leading up to working with others like the kids in Saturday group on The Wishing Wizard and assorted comedy skits ending with Phoebe Murer and her story translated into radio format called “Tug Of War” the first ever serialized play on this program. And I almost forgot about including Bob Delaney, Maria Illiou, Erik Eastbrook and others in the all-star ensemble “The Silent Affliction”, my first play I’d ever written period back in high school.
Radio Drama is about everything: Community, The Autistic Paradigm, Culture and Potential. As well, all genres are celebrated like Sci-Fi, Drama, Comedy, Horror, and current issues.
I’d be remiss if I neglected to mention Bob Delaney again, editor by trade and part of Naturally Autistic Magazine’s team. He has valuable insight and shows it on our Monthly show “Writer’s Block” where we squeeze in the autistic system and writing as an artform together through a variety of subjects. He’s certainly come a long way as co-host and will continue to prosper in this medium for years to come (should he choose to remain. No exclusion of free choice, I promise).
So, with Season One of Radio Drama over, I’ll begin Season Two under the umbrealls of Autism Awareness Month. In celebration, I’ll be presenting, for this season premier, “Speak For Myself” only now that hurdles have been cleared for music use, I will incorporate the intended songs from Peter Gabriel as were utilized in the live version of the show. It’ll be a new experience as, proven by other shows, music is also a form of storytelling and its associations with certain elements of story bring out the best in terms of enjoyment and resonance. Plus, it’s also good marketing as well with songs long forgotten granted new life and new awareness for the artists behind them.
With this, I will end this blog on the note I usually begin with the Radio Drama shows: Compelling Drama, Gut-Busting Comedy and General Enjoyment for your Saturdays. This provided in spades for the upcoming season two as was true for Season One.
Thank you.
